Melissa Evers opened Creative Movement Dance Academy back in April after Central Missouri Dance Alliance closed mid-season.
It was her fear that the children would no longer have the ability to practice dance, which was going to stop when CMDA. Evers took over the venture, moved to a new building and changed the name.
“I wanted to start anew,” said Evers. “So I moved the business into the old Peace Pantry building and thought up a new name. Since I had never been a dancer or teacher, I knew I needed to hire some knowledgeable instructors to train the children.”
Since that time, Evers and dance teachers Lauren Preston, Marissa Camden and Belle Halfhill have been educating children in all styles of dance, to include acrobatics.
“We start at age 3 and go until 12th grade,” said Evers. “We offer both recital and competition classes.”
To continue her efforts in offering dance to all children, Evers is hosting a free dance day July 31. The different age/time brackets are 3-5 years old from 6-6:30 p.m., 6-8 years old from 6:30-7 p.m. and 9 and above from 7:30-8 p.m.
During each of the 30-minute sessions, children will be shown several styles of dance and taught certain combos.
“It’s about getting the kids out of the house to enjoy a bit of fun,” said Evers. “If they like it and enroll in summer and upcoming fall sessions, then that is a blessing as well.”
Both girls and boys are welcome to attend the free dance day. It is advised, however, that interested individuals RSVP to make sure there is adequate room in the studio situated at 6672 Veterans Drive in Cedar Hill.
